MTM Solenoid Fault Codes and Vehicle Air System Contamination

Date: April 6, 2023

Updated: February 24, 2026

Issue Description:

Customers have reported that the transmission service indicator is illuminated, accompanied by one or more solenoid valve fault codes. When performing fault code isolation and troubleshooting procedures, no defects may be identified, which can result in the replacement of the Mechatronic Transmission Module (MTM).

During the MTM warranty return inspection process, engineering identified contamination in the MTM housing air inlet, passages, and internal components. It has been determined the source of contamination is from the vehicle air system.

MTM air passages and internal components contaminated by the vehicle air system results in sticking Rail Solenoid valves causing incomplete shifts and setting Active Rail Solenoid and Operation fault codes.

Fault Codes associated with vehicle air system contamination:

* If Endurant XD or PACCAR TX-18 and Fault Code 597 SPN 5909 FMI 7 or 17 is set, contact Eaton Cummins Automated Transmission Technologies help line for further diagnostic instructions:

  • US and Canada: +1-800-826-4357
  • Mexico: +52-800-800-6801

**If Endurant HD or PACCAR TX-12 and Fault Code 617 SPN 5910 FMI 14 is set, go to troubleshooting guide TRTS0950 Fault Code 617 fault code isolation procedure.

Containment/Corrective Action:

Effective immediately it is no longer required to inspect the vehicle air dryer cartridge and/or the MTM air inlet screen as part of the transmission warranty claim process for MTMs with solenoid valve fault codes outlined in the Issue Description.

If fault codes outlined in the Issue Description are present, download a Service Activity Report (SAR) and Send to Eaton. The SAR and fault code snapshot data will be reviewed by Eaton Cummins Automated Transmission Technologies (Eaton Cummins). If the data indicates a sticking valve due to contamination, the claim will be considered non-warrantable. Refer to the OEM for air system warrantable guidelines.

If snapshot data is not available or does not indicate a sticking valve, warranty determination is pending and will be confirmed upon the return and physical inspection of the MTM.

Notice
Do not remove the MTM cover.

Refer to Vehicle Maintenance Recommendations regarding transmission vehicle air system requirements to ensure proper air supply and air quality to the transmission.

Affected Models/Population:

  • Endurant HD
  • PACCAR TX-12
  • Endurant XD / XD PRO
  • PACCAR TX-18 / TX-18 PRO

Field Strategy:

Procedure A: Create a Service Activity Report

1. Key on engine off.

2. Connect ServiceRanger.

3. Create a Service Activity Report (SAR).

4. Select “Send to Eaton”. Go to Procedure B.

Procedure B: Review Fault Codes

1. Record the transmission fault codes, FMI’s, occurrences, and timestamps.

2. Compare SAR fault codes with fault codes in table - Issue Description:

  • If any SAR fault code appears in the table, go to Procedure C.
  • If other transmission related fault codes are set, this document does not apply. Go to product specific troubleshooting guide.
    • Endurant HD TRTS0950 - Fault Code Isolation Procedure Index.
    • Endurant XD TRTS0960 - Fault Code Isolation Procedure Index.

Procedure C: Fill out and submit the online claim form or create a TCS case.

Based on transmission model, determine next steps:

• If Endurant HD or Endurant XD:

  • Go to Submission Form | TAIB-1006 | Eaton Cummins.

Note: If all the required information was provided, a claim will be created. SAR snapshot data reviewed, and the claim updated accordingly. Check the claim status online using your Dealer Code and Repair Order Number.

• If PACCAR TX-12 or PACCAR TX-18:

  • From PACCAR.net, go to:
    • Applications > Total Customer Solutions 365 > Vehicle Support > Technical Assistance.
  • Select Type - Powertrain Support
  • Select Case Category - Transmission Diagnostics
  • Click Continue
  • Fill out the case submission form and include “TAIB-1006” in the Subject field.
  • Submit the case.
Notice
If snapshot data indicates a sticking valve due to contamination, Eaton Cummins recommends inspection and repair of the vehicle air system to correct the source of contamination. Refer to OEM or vehicle air system manufacturer to ensure proper air system operation and maintenance guidelines are followed, i.e. drain water from air tanks, replace air system filters and cartridges. Refer to Vehicle Maintenance Recommendations in transmission service manual. Recommend inspection of the air dryer filter/cartridge(s): Confirm type (oil coalescing), maintenance interval and condition.

Warranty Information:

Contamination from the vehicle’s air supply is not a warrantable repair and is considered secondary damage. Transmission warranty covers defects in materials and/or workmanship. Reference Eaton Cummins Automated Transmission Technologies Warranty Manual ECWY3000.

Caution
Before performing service on the MTM, create a Service Activity Report (SAR) and select “Send to Eaton” (internet connection required) and ensure at least one of the associated Fault Codes are present and show up in the snapshot logs (See RRMT0047). If no associated Fault Code is present in the snapshot logs, this document does not apply. Filing a claim without an associated Fault Code present or without an SAR will result in a rejected warranty claim.

Warranty Parts:

• If the snapshot data confirms a sticking valve due to contamination -

  • Non-Warrantable Repair
  • Refer to OEM and repair/maintain vehicle air system
  • Refer to Vehicle Maintenance Recommendations
  • Recommend MTM replacement

• If snapshot data is not available or does not indicate sticking valve but has a suspected vehicle air system contamination fault code, warranty determination is pending and will be confirmed upon the return and physical inspection of the MTM.

  • Return MTM pending inspection
  • Recommend MTM replacement
