Vehicle Maintenance Recommendations

Transmission Air Supply

For optimal performance, the Endurant transmission requires a nominal air supply operating range between 99 psi (683 kPa) and 130 psi (896 kPa). Air supply outside this range can result in degraded or complete loss of transmission engagement and shift capabilities.

Air Quality

Clean dry air is required for the transmission shift actuation system, i.e., MTM. The Endurant transmission air supply is required to meet or exceed ISO 8573-1:2010 7.3.4. The vehicle air system supplying the transmission shall use a high quality, commercially available oil coalescing air dryer. Air quality for solid contamination shall meet a minimum of ISO 8573 Class 7. Air quality for water contamination shall meet a minimum of ISO 8573-1 Class 3. Air quality for oil contamination shall meet a minimum of ISO 8573-1 Class 4.

To effectively remove contaminants from the vehicle air system - including particles, water and oil - a high-quality oil-coalescing type air dryer cartridge is required. Eaton Cummins Automated Transmission Technologies recommends the following oil-coalescing type air dryer cartridge by manufacturer:

  • Bendix® PuraGuard® or PuraGuard Plus™
  • WABCO Air System ProtectorPLUS

Eaton Cummins Automated Transmission Technologies highly recommends an oil-coalescing air dryer cartridge service interval of one (1) year or less.

Caution
Clean vehicle supplied air is important for transmission system operation. Refer to OEM and/or vehicle air system manufacturer maintenance guidelines and air dryer cartridge service intervals. Failure to follow the recommended vehicle air system maintenance and service intervals results in contamination of the transmission shift actuation system and may void warranty.
Notice
Air additives such as alcohol should not be permitted to enter the transmission shift actuation system. Additives could damage the transmission shift actuation system resulting in degraded transmission performance and may void warranty.

Note: For additional information, reference Section 6: Pneumatic System Requirements of the applicable Endurant Product Family Installation Guide:

  • Endurant HD - TRIG0950
  • Endurant XD - TRIG0960

Vehicle Air System Operating Temperature

Vehicle air system temperature can affect air dryer performance. High air dryer inlet temperatures can vaporize oil into an aerosol, allowing it to pass through the air dryer and into the vehicle air system. Air leaks in the truck or trailer can increase compressor run time and duty cycle, raising air system operating temperatures. Repair vehicle air system leaks as needed, refer to OEM and/or vehicle air system manufacture guidelines.

If air dryer inlet temperatures are higher than expected and vehicle air system leaks are not the cause, refer to OEM and/or air system manufacturer’s troubleshooting guides.

Caution
Proper vehicle air system operation and maintenance is important for transmission system operation. Refer to OEM and/or vehicle air system manufacture regarding air system operation and maintenance. Failure to ensure proper vehicle air system operation and maintenance results in contamination of the transmission shift actuation system and may void warranty.
